The Prose Parade

Some things came up this week while I was working with someone on their memoir, but they apply to any writing.

1. Size counts. Short paragraphs make your writing easier to read. So do short sentences.

Shorter graphs also keep your thoughts clear. What is the point of each paragraph? When you move on to your next point/beat, you move on to the next graph.

Strunk & White say the length of sentences and graphs should reflect the content of the book/essay. If your material is complex or academic or you're going for literary density, then bigger may be better.
