Don't Wear White (and Other Sage Advice About How to Write & Perform Comedy)

Steve Martin wears whiteA lot of people have advice about how to make comedy. We disagree with a lot of it, but one thing for sure: There's no one right or wrong way to do it and you probably have to try a lot of things before you find what works for you.

A blogger/writer named Pamela Rice Hahn has thoughtfully compiled a number of books about writing and performing comedy (along with her own editorial notes) for your creative convenience.

Here's one of my favorite pieces of advice (from Beth Lapides as quoted in Judy Carter's Comedy Bible): "Wear what you feel comfortable in. Some comics feel good in tight clothes. Some in loose. Bobcat wears hats, which is saying, 'I see myself as a clown.' I bring a change of clothes with me because I don't know how I will feel when I get to the club. Although I find that white is unfunny."
