A lot of people have advice about how to make comedy. We disagree with a lot of it, but one thing for sure: There's no one right or wrong way to do it and you probably have to try a lot of things before you find what works for you.
A blogger/writer named Pamela Rice Hahn has thoughtfully compiled a number of books about writing and performing comedy (along with her own editorial notes) for your creative convenience.
Here's one of my favorite pieces of advice (from Beth Lapides as quoted in Judy Carter's Comedy Bible): "Wear what you feel comfortable in. Some comics feel good in tight clothes. Some in loose. Bobcat wears hats, which is saying, 'I see myself as a clown.' I bring a change of clothes with me because I don't know how I will feel when I get to the club. Although I find that white is unfunny."
White really does, in our experience, seem to be a comedy killer for everyone except Steve Martin. And who knows how much funnier he might have been!
Of course you can get personalized advice and specific notes at our writing & performing workshop, but we've also compiled a bunch of it in the You But Funnier download.
And finally, here's some advice that Dennis Miller gave Beth when she was starting out: "Comedy is all about the hair." He should know.
